Under our feet, below eighteen feet of human debris, lies the first tributary of the Thames that we will cross as we take our first steps. It was there running down from the hills to the north when the first human wandered over between deep freezes when there was dry land all the way to Africa and enough good food to find maybe 400,00 years ago.
A few thousand years ago there were tribes of ancient Britons living in the south of England long after it warmed up and was separated by sea. The largest ones lived fortified camps in North and East of London, so when the Romans came they saw this place was fit for a military bridge to cross the Thames, reach and conquer them.
Once the bridge was built people came through and this place full of traders was called Londinium. The Romans settled down built a market hall not long after they built a bridge across the Thames just downstream and people settled here.
To the west of us is Ludgate Hill topped with St Pauls. to our West up Cheapside, and Corn Hill once home to the Roman Forum
We start in the heart of London, outside the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England and inside the ancient roman city walls of Londinium.
